The recent cold snap that swept the city was a blessing in disguise for hockey fan and outdoor enthusiast Tim Mellon. In fact, Mellon and his three kids were among the first to celebrate as soon as the mercury started to drop. With frigid temperatures and wet snow, comes a yearly tradition of building a backyard hockey rink.
“We build it as a family and we enjoy it as a family,” says Mellon, adding it’s a convenient way to get his kids off the couch and playing outside.
Building your own backyard rink is simple as long as you have the right tools, says Rob Calvert, customer training co-ordinator for Home Depot.
“You basically need some pegs, some plywood and a tarp,” says Calvert.
He says using a RinkRake — a specialized tool that uniformly floods the ice surface with just enough water to freeze on contact — will keep the surface nice and uniform.
The $50 RinkRake is among a number of products now on the market for backyard builders. Tarps, liners, even entire kits (complete with NHL-style red lines and blue lines) can be purchased at home improvement stores or online. |
